When radiators are in place for many years, they usually settle into the floor on the side of the radiator away from the one pipe. this traps water in the bottom of the radiator. This pool of water reboils as steam passes over it making sizzling sounds, and the high-speed steam picks up water as it speeds over the surface of the pool, slamming water against the end of the radiator. This can be seen more clearly in the illustrations at the bottom of:
