IMHO I would go with the separate (indirect) heater, especially for larger homes and families (teenagers). I would base my brand mostly on cost and reputation of the installer and maintenance company, given comparable warranties. This is a steam forum. For hot water boilers I might look at more modern designs, especially sealed combustion. I believe there is efficiency ratings by model at gama.net.
