If you have a cold damp basement with no draft up the chimney in the summer the standing pilot can cause a lot of corrosion right above it where the gases condense. You can shut a standing pilot off for the summer and have the best of both worlds. If you have a steam boiler and a standing pilot you might be able to have full heating capabilities during power outages depending on your other controls.
