There are many steam tips in the old posts on this site. You can also find more tips at http://www.hydronic.net - it has links to other steam learning sites.
The longevity can not be estimated because some steam systems are still running after 100 years, with just some replacement of rusted pipe. A hot water heating system is more flexible and energy-saving than steam. Many people however prefer steam to warm air or electric heat for comfort and savings.
