Draining settled particles out of the bottom of the boiler and the low water cutoff with the gauge glass is most of the maintenance required for the homeowner. Continue asking until you can get an experienced steam heating plumber to do a yearly cleanout of the low water cutoff during the summer and check of the system operation during the winter. You want the gas burner and venting to remain in top condition.

There is some information on steam at http://www.hydronic.net with a list of other links to steam maintenance education and books. Look for other steam references on this site as well.
