: I had a lennox (conservator) gas fired induced draft boiler (GWB150) installed in my house 6 months ago. I noticed a mineral deposit buildup directly under the ball valve (threaded fitting) on the hot water return leading back into the boiler. Is this normal?

Do not shut the valve from city water and rely on the low water cut off to shut the boiler down when water leaks out!!!!....you have a leak somewhere in your heating system....go find it....fix it....the mineral deposits come from fresh water being introduced into the system because there is a leak somewhere...that same leak could be rotting out a part of your building...go find it...fix it...leave the make up valve open.....fix the cause, not the symptom...the low water cut out is a safety device, not a normal control device....boiler safety is paramount and comes before boiler anything else...if you want to relax, installed a meter on your city water line to the boiler...check it once a month or every day...it will serve to gage the efforts as you make repairs, less consumption means you are getting there...once the system is tight, it will serve to alert you to a new leak...no meter spin means a tight system...
