Harold, how often should the sludge be drained. I am approaching 3 years in my new old home, without it being drained. I asked the service tech about sludge buildup on his last visit, and he replied, "There's not much you can do about it." I suspect that the sludge has not been drained for quite a bit longer than my tenure, as the valve handle appears to have been removed to make room for the burner unit.

If I tackle this myself, how much water/sludge will I drain from the chamber? Also, I will add a length of pipe to get that valve out beyond the burner so I can put a handle on it and drain it in the future.
