I allow the boiler to cool to ambient temp, (shut off the gas and controll system) then drain the boiler and wash it out real good. Inspect it for corrosion, or deposits on the water side. These things can cause a steam boiler to fail during the heating season. If you drain the boiler before the water cools to ambient temp, you will bake the sludge on and cleaning will be tougher. If cleaning with a hose is not enough, your local water treatment expert can help
