You need to blowdown enough to keep stuff from piling up. Try once a month (weekly if it hasn't been done) and if you get nothing you can stretch it out. Many people need a schedule, like every Sunday instead of church. You should do it as a minimum twice a year to keep everything able to move. The stuff can settle into the valves and jam them for one thing. Follow the manufacturer's spec while in warranty unless you want to pay for the defective boiler. Blow out the LWC, return and guage glass too if you have fittings for it. Keep leaks fixed to limit fresh water and if you add much at all for repairs. Boiling gets dissolved gases out. Let water cool and settle and check for solids.
