main vent is a device installed usualy near the end of the steam supply pipe in the basement, usually but not always up on a pipe nipple about 15'' back from the end of the steam supply main pipe.
it is a bit confusing with the radiator description your giving. there was for a brief period of time, a two pipe air vent system. it looked like one pipe steam with the air vent, but had a radiator discharge pipe that dropped into a wet return in the basement. we still see these in cleveland.
