If you have soot, you might be able to pull the stack switch out of the flue and tap the soot off of the sensing element. Get the thing cleaned and tuned. Filling your house with soot is not a pretty thing, especially if you don't have insurance for that. It is not that rare to have a blowback that covers everything.
