BANGING IN PIPES

I have a single-pipe steam system which, for many years, has worked fine. Over the past two seasons,I've noticed an increase in banging throughout the second floor as the steam enters the pipes. In my bedrooom, there is a valve at one end of the room where there was never a radiator, and now that pipe has started banging as well. All radiators are cast-iron and ptiched correctly, as they get hot in a reasonable amount of time. There's definitely water in the system, and I can't figure out why. Water level in the boiler is where it should be. HELP!
