: We have been shown some scale from a boiler operating with a softener and a product named Advantage 6240 plus, the pressure is about 6 bar.
: The scale is dark brown, of low density, the tube side is smooth and shiny, insoluble in dilute hydrochloric acid.
: We are puzzled as to the cause, any comments and experiences would be appreciated.
: Thank you, Derek
The causes of scale are many. High tds, improper alkalinity, ineffective blowdown, improper blowdown, poor chemical maintenance, and many other things, including inattentive operators. What I would recommend is to send the scale sample for analysis. This will tell you what the majority of the scale is composed of and should help you to determine what caused it and how to prevent it in the future.
