I've seen a discussion on this topic on another board, and I don't recall that there was a definitive answer. It was worded slightly differently, in that the question was something like "How far apart to welds have to be?" I remember there was a lot of responses about corporate engineering standards for various companies had requirements, and restriction, but not much in the way of actual code wording. I've always taken the viewpoint that whoever is invoking any kind of code reference, needs to be able to back it up by pointing out the specific wording in the applicable code. And that includes inspectors.

I'm not aware of any such restriction, but if there's any doubt, ask your local inspector.

You'll have to make two cuts and bevels for this job anyway, so why not just cut out the whole 6" piece, and weld in a single replacement piece 9" long? Or is this in an ugly spot, and you can't get one end?
