Alliant Energy is looking for a Boiler Operator and Maintenance Tech - Water
to join our Emery Generating Station in Clear Lake, IA.

Position Summary/Accountabilities
This position is responsible for all aspects of the operation, maintenance, testing, safety and monitoring of equipment at the Emery Generating Station. The Boiler Operator & Maintenance Technician-W will be cross-trained to proficiency in all areas as noted and will become expert in one of the areas, allowing each member of the team to contribute in all areas of Emery’s operations, maintenance and monitoring functions.

Job Functions
The requirements listed below are representative of, but not limited to, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to do the job.

Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety. This requires observing and enforcing safety rules, polices, and practices, encouraging safe work behaviors, and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe behaviors, which may lead to accidents.

Performs a variety of work connected with the operations, inspections and maintenance of combined cycle sites. Performs the mechanical, electrical and basic instrument and control troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, cleaning, inspecting and constructing of equipment and systems for the generation facility.

Performs water sampling and chemistry on all systems. Performs clean-up and preservation tasks throughout the facility.

Operates control equipment to obtain safe and economical operation of boilers, turbines and auxiliary equipment

Responsible for the assembly, repair and testing of equipment such as turbines, pumps, compressors, etc. Performs maintenance and repairs on bearings, seals, packing glands, etc. Repairs and maintains equipment and machinery, in accordance with proscribed manuals, specifications and codes using hand tools, shop equipment and test and analysis equipment such as micrometers, calipers, feeler gauges, and dial indicators.

Operates switchboard to obtain safe and proper operation of plant and system electrical equipment.

Performs various welding activities including weld repairs on equipment and structures. Installs, repairs and replaces piping.

Supports safety, plant reliability, productivity, and plant efficiency improvements by participating in various continuous improvement activities.

Performs all work according to established procedures and safety practices.

Performs various generating plant and shop area housekeeping functions.

Participates in outage work in all areas of operations, maintenance, repair and testing.

Performs other duties which are similar, related, or incidental to this position.

Technical/Job Skills Qualifications
The candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications and have demonstrated the following technical or job skills:

Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes.

Able to perform lab testing such as: pH and ammonia calibration, titration, filtration, pipetting, winkler, TSS, BOD’s, total dissolved solids and other lab tests.

Ability to implement the DNR Code of Methods for wastewater testing.

Knowledge of chemistries such as: acids, caustics, pH buffers, Sodium Thiosulfate, Alkaline, Iodine and Manganese Sulfate.

Operating lab equipment, which includes spectrophotometer, pH meter, fume hood, stirrer hot plate, BOD meter, conductivity meter, ammonia meter, and gas detector.

Monthly reporting to DNR by using Excel for water flows and other environmental reporting requirements.

Maximize water chemistry parameters by utilizing a SCADA system.

Diagnose plant water conditions/problems associated with plant operations.

Knowledge of boiler operation and chemistries associated with boilers.

Minimum of 2 year degree in Chemistry or related subject.

Two - 4 years experience and/or equivalent in an electric generating facility.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group.
