Paid a little more attention this morning... burner started to go through its startup sequence when the themrometer dropped to 168, and hsut off when the thermometer rose to 174... aquastat was set to 170... so unless you tell me I definitely can't trust these readings because of the location (output pipe), logic says the aquastat seems to agree with m ythermometer, so the gauge is probably reading bad...
Not wanting to be the guy who keeps taking readings until he finds readings he likes, I figure the next step is to replace the gauge and hopefully it'll agree with the aquastat and the thermometer...

Logical?
