thermostat compatibility

Hi-
I bought a thermostat with a remote sensor by Climate Technology Corporation. Can I use this with my Buderus boiler? The thermostat is compatible with multi-stage heat pumps, single-state heat pumps, and conventional multi-stage systems.

The current thermostat has three wires (R,W,G). I think that I can hook up R to R (to power the thermostat), W to W2 (heating stage 2, or the only stage if one stage), and G to G (fan, which we obviously don't have, but I am hoping this won't hurt). The thermostat instructions say I also need a C wire for 24 VAC common. Is this absolutely necessary or can I just depend on the battery to power the thermostat?

Thanks very much.

Ted
