We've lived in an old farmhouse in southwestern Ohio for about 15 years. It has a steam boiler that is around 50 years old and in need of repair. We've gotten estimates on a new steam boiler but some of the contractors have discouraged us by saying that the new boiler wouldn't work well due to possible sediment or flaking in our old pipes and we would have ongoing trouble with it, and that even a new boiler wouldn't be very cost efficient. They also want us to switch to a forced air furnace instead. We were always happy with steam heat before and don't know if what they're saying is true or if they just want us to spend more on a new forced air heating system. Any ideas or input for our situation would be appreciated.
