The reason I was leaning toward buying a new boiler is the age of the existing one (30 year old New Yorker)and not knowing how much longer it will last. On the other hand we don't have the cash to buy a new boiler right now which means the true cost will be higher than what was quoted. Interestingly the salesman, who was made aware of our financial plight, gave the same recommendation as you, that is add an indirect and use with the existing boiler.
I think I'll go with the indirect proposal as you suggest. Our financial situation should improve over the next couple of years; plus we'll be in a better postion to shop around for competing qoutes (our showers are getting colder and colder) when we do decide to replace the boiler.
