I greatly appreciate your advice. We made it through a very cold night with electric heaters and kerosene heaters. My contractor was back out. He finally cleaned out the conbustion chamber...said the area around the water coils was pretty plugged with soot, etc. I told him to clean it on his previous visit. The top of the flame holder was partially blown off...apparently from the "explosions". He checked the gas pressures and CO at exhaust and said they were fine. My question: In theory, the flames and hot gases are supposed to come out of the flame holder and through the spaces around the water coils. Being that they were plugged from 15 years of neglect, is it likely that that is what was causing the explosions or should I hire a new contractor?
