+++ very good idea. If the heat exchanger was red hot from no water cooling it - you might have been in pieces outside the building in an instant. NEVER add water to a clanging boiler with no water showing.

how much water can I expect to put in there?
+++ before, very little. NOW? unknown, you might never fill it again.

Why would my level have dropped so much so quickly? Crack in my system somewhere?
+++ YES!

Time for an inspection and maybe a new boiler. Keep it off until somebody knowing comes in.
