Steam Vents - How long should they last

I replaced all of the radiator vents in my 1-pipe steam heat system roughly 3 years ago. Everything was fine for the first year but since then I have had to replace almost EVERY vent at least once!

The failure is always the same - The vent will not close and hot steam just pours out. I'm using Hoffman 1A 90º vents and if I rotate them upside down the steam will stop but it comes hissing out again the moment I turn the vent upright again.

Is it normal for vents to fail this quickly? Can anyone recommend a different brand or model that lasts longer?

I have tried flushing out the vents in the sink and I have got some flakes of corrosion out of them but they never work properly when I scre them back into the system.

Thanks in advance.
