: How long can 32 fuel oil be stored before it goes bad? The purpose of fuel oil is to oxidize. Although additives are in the oil to slow the rate, it will oxidize in time. Additives are also in fuel oil to slow the rate of bacterial growth that causes sludge. The degradation rate depends upon temperature and climate as well. Generally, oil sitting over three years has a high probability of much sludging. The addition of biofuel can accelerate the degradation. Mixtures over 50% biofuel are often recommended to be used up in the same season and not stored for the next year.
