lowering steam radiators for new floor installation.

I am putting in a tile floor in the
kitchen. The orriginal floor was only
a 3/4 T&G porch flooring over rafters
and a crawl space. The kitchen was added
on to the 1860's farmhouse in the 1920's.
I am putting 1/2 inch backer board over the
floor and 1/4 inch (12 x 12) tile.
TWO QUESTIONS...
1) If the old radiator has not been ever
trimmed on the legs, should I be able to
cut off some to allow the input pipe to
fit after the new floor is installed?
2) I imagine that the heavy weight of the
radiator will crack the tile when I reinstall
the radiator. Would it be better to put a
hardwood 1/2 inch block over the backer board
on each end and tile around the block so the
weight is not on the ceramic?

Thanks
George
