You want to apply the same idea to an air trap as is done in a water trap; thus, an air trap 1/4 mile high would do the same pressures, due to the weight difference of the air in the pipe compared to water.

Just follow the code suggestions for combustion air and bring the bottom near the floor. Warm air rises and cold air falls, but your burner is going to suck air in from the outdoors to do the job and if you have a trap that really stops air flow, it won't work the way you want it to.
