So the factory installation instructions tell exactly how they want the system piped to prevent flashing, banging, and destruction.
When you run the domestic water circuit, you devote the entire heat process to the indirect, which has a higher resistance than the 12-inch length of larger main pipe, so you need to close off the path of least resistance to get enough water to flow through the indirect exchanger instead of through the bypass.
