People use the air intake piping to have good control of boiler combustion pressures to assure dependable firing rates, and the enclosed combustion air intake to the outside offers improved safety. The potential of condensation on the intake pipe is a potential annoyance that can be solved by insulation, which again increases the cost of installation. It is possible not to use the intake piping; but you have the possibility of gases back at the short boiler intake. People have lived with that for over 100 years, so it hasn't been their worry. It is a real choice for you to decide which you will accept.
