I live in New Jersey in a 1700 Square foot 3-bedroom Cape Cod house. I was just quoted by a fairly large contractor $7750 to replace my old oil/steam boiler with a new Weil McLain PEG-45-S-SPDN gas/steam boiler (with an additional $400 for an automatic water feeder). The house is 73 years old, with brick veneer, and plaster walls with no added insulation. I already have gas in the house, for the water heater, right next to the existing boiler. The quote seems awfully high to me based on what other who have converted have told me. Since this is a conversion, I need to use a contractor referred by the gas company to get the $500 rebate, which makes me suspicious of collusion among them. Can anyone give me some advice regarding:

1) Is the above-mentioned boiler suitable for my house or is it oversized?
2) Am I being overcharged?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
