You will more likely need a check valve because the radiant system should have been divided up into circuits no longer than 300 feet long each which makes floor areas of about 100 to 150 square feet per circuit; so there is a high probability you would use more than one circulator in zoning the home.

If you use more than one circulator, then you will definitely need a flow control check valve to prevent water from going backwards through the other circulator that is not running. If you have one circulator for the entire home, then you won't need the check valve as each zone valve would do the same duty as a check valve.
