As heatpro stated it depends on the boiler and application. You did not state what type of boiler you are working with although I must assume it is a Weil.
Standard casdt and steel boilers the circulator will be mounted on the supply afyer the expansion tank connection. The main purpose is for air elimination. The circulator will add pressure to the system breaking up the air bubbles and making it easier for them to move and be eliminated.
