There is no reason for the pump to cavitate. You said the sound and jumping doesn't occur until the boiler is firing, and flushing the system gets rid of the sound. Closing down the boiler outlet valve puts a front pressure on the circulator, so that should also assure less probability of cavitation. You would need a significant negative pressure on the pump inlet, but the expansion tank at the ErgoMax prevents that. A pressure gauge at the circulator side of the closed bypass valve would show the pump suction pressure. A 25 TD across the boiler shows that the flow rate is well within the pump curve. Summing up - no.
