Zone valves are not check valves, they shut off water flow in either direction when they are in the branch circuit to the radiators, so they will shut water off either on the supply or the return
(thus the previous instruction saying that.)

Where you put the zone valve in the 1/2-inch lines going to the radiator is just convenience for you wherever you can get to them easily.
