The existing boiler could probably out live your children. The piping upstairs will certainly, except where any sags hold water to corrode it. If the piping was redone, it should be converted to hot water heat. Steam boilers must be sized to the existing load. Go to Harold's website or colonialsupply.com on how to size it yourself to check them. You may have a chimney problem, especially if it is an old unlined one. The chimney might not clear the roof enough, causing the pilot to go out. If you have a brick house, oor uninsulated walls, that is your high bills.
