Are you familiar with water hammer? Any chance that's what the noise is? If not, try to
describe it a little better. A single "thump"? A series of loud "bangs"?
Another possibility is a pipe passing through a structural member and binding, then,
after further expansion, breaking loose suddenly. Try to be near the source of the
sound when it happens in order to locate it better, and to see if there is any movement
associated with the sound.
