Would increasing the system pressure slightly reduce the steam velocity enough to balance this out?
*** Think about that for a moment; how would increasing the steam pressure reduce velocity? It would make the velocity increase. Increasing pressure (E), increases quantity (A) against a fixed resistance (R).

And how would this explain why taking the large radiator offline allows steam to make it to the otherwise cold rads?
*** Taking the large radiator off line reduces the quantity of steam running up the main, so it allows more condensate to return.
