installing stelrad in old system

I replaced my big old 1924 hot water rad with a new much smaller stelrad. Bled the rad till the water coming out of the bleed valve was hot. Still no circulation in the rad. I wonder if going to 1/2 copper from the old caste iron pipes going into the stelrad (not the whole system) caused a circ problem? OR maybe I got the intake and return pipes reversed going into the new rad? I was told that wasn't supposed to matter. Any thoughts?
