I currently have this boiler in my home (going to changeout this summer) and am also an HVAC Technician. You can place square pieces of refractory material (1") cut to size and can be bought at any Sid Harvey's to protect the boiler surfaces from overheating and aid in raising your overall boiler efficiency. This boiler is a wet-base type though and is meant to have the boiler lower section exposed to the flame (but should never touch the surfaces) for added heat transfer. This boiler cannot achieve above an 80% efficiency rating due to age (mine is at 81.5% and I squeezed this after much toying with multiple adjustments, nozzle configs., etc.). Also the round burner plate insulation material located behind this plate is unavailable (approx. 4" thick and round). If you own this boiler I recommend boiler changeout due to age of components than sinking too much money into repairs...
