Cause of circulator failure?

I had a Taco 0011 circulator fail this week on my Weil-Mclain Ultra system. Initially the circulator made some strange noises and then just quit turning. All the electical checked out OK, and when the technican pulled off the motor and removed the cartridge, it would not turn freely. After forcing it to spin around a few times, it seemed to spin OK. Regardless, the cartridge and motor were replaced under waranty. The tech noted some rust-colored residue on the impeller and said it might be a good idea to have the water tested and/or some preventative maintenance done.

Any idea what may have caused this failure? Is the residue a concern?
