The greatest appeal of gas heat other than the price has been the clean nature of gas. You can't really spill it on anything, and if you did for a long time, it would probably send you into the next county.

While oil won't blow up outside the heater, an oil heater can blow up from bad or neglected yearly service and spilled oil contains pollutants which could cost a fortune to clean up.

Neglect a gas heater with no gas leaks, and it just won't work.

It is a toss-up as to price and ease vs the difficulty of getting adequate repairmen, special care of oil, and searching for price breaks.
