Many areas have hard water that creates calcium deposits. The boiler you have is often used for condos as it is a spacesaver. However, sometimes the combination of hard water and the small boiler is not the best combination, as lime build-up means the boiler has to be cleaned and rebuilt every several years. Europeans are used to this as they have the same conditions; however Americans are used to ignoring heaters till they fail.

If there is space, you could extend the service periods by sending the boiler heat to an indirect heater, so the boiler water would be sealed and no longer have fresh water going through it.
