: +++ No, don't do that, you shouldn't have a restriction in the pump inlet line; that can cause cavitation and pump damage. A balancing valve should be on the pump OUTLET line at least 6 pipe diameters away from the circulator outlet.
I think you misunderstood me. The balancing valve would be about a foot BEYOND the pump (between the pump and the boiler inlet) as the pump pumps into the boiler inlet. Essentially, the pump would pump toward the balancing valve. Isn't that correct?
The shutoff above the pump would be to isolate the pump just in case the pump had to be replaced.
