To add to Heatpro's comments. Check your main line vents. The main line vents a crucial to getting the air from the main rapidly. If venting is an issue you could have symtoms as you are expalining. Do you hear any vents hissing as they are ventiung air? If so the main line vents are too small, or bad.
The second thing is the mail horizontal piping in the basement insulated? If not the steam collapses and pressure drops like a rock.
