Water hammer is created when live steam comes in contact with water in a horizontal pipe or possible in the bottom of the radiator. The pipes must pitch down normally away from the highpoint above the boiler.(Parallel Flow) Fewer systems will flow the condensate back to the boiler with the high point at the end of the main. (counterflow) The main should never go up then down. This will trap water and cause water hammer. Pictures would be nice.
