Steam to water convert

Another question - I hope I can explain this in a way that makes sense. We have just converted our old house from 2 pipe steam to hot water. We have 3 main supply lines that supply the first, second and third floors. I noticed that when these main supplys go up into the house from the basement that there is a pipe at the bottom of each connection that is going back to the boiler return. I'm assuming when the system was steam these carried any left over condensate back to the boiler. My question is should these pipes be eliminated in a hot water system? These sections of pipe are not insulated and I am sure will cause heat loss to the water going back to the boiler. I hope I explained this clearly - if not let me know. Thanks for the input.
