If you can establish that your system is EXACTLY like everyone else's then for the most part one can guess that adding water is OK. If it isn't EXACTLY like everyone else's and might have cast iron radiators and steel pipes instead of copper tube baseboard, then you might have had someone put antifreeze in the system (which is a good idea) and let it leak for a while (which is a bad idea) so oxygen has been added by the pressure reducing valve, making the water black from rust. When you are certain enough about what the system is made of to tell others, then they could give better advice based on knowledge rather than assuming too much.
