Weirdest thing I've seen. Our boiler usually can put out enough steam through the radiators to roast us, but it just wasn't putting out that much from the radiators. The boiler room was chilly as well. We also have a 1-pipe system.

The fix for us was to insulate the front doors which were leaking lots of cold air in. The radiator next to the thermostat in the entryway started warming up more consistently after that and the house finally got more comfortable. Before that, the core hallway had dropped to 57F!

Not sure what vari-valves are, but we use Maid-O-Mist thermostatic valves. They're lots better than those old cylindrical things, though it looks like one or two are starting to stick closed which the design is supposed to prevent. Gorton valves first came up w/ this design I think.
