Are you sure that is smoke that you are seeing? Or is it water vapor (often incorrectly called steam)?
Any hydrocarbon fuel produces water vapor as one of the products of combustion, and it will condense when it hits cold air, making a pretty spectacular cloud at times.
To detect for smoke, a technician should use a sampling device that filters out soot particles and then they are matched against a sample to come up with a "Smoke number".
You need to have it checked by a professional to find out if it is, indeed, smoke, or if it is only water vapor.
