I am looking to replace my current heating system from electric forced air to oil baseboard. My hose is 2500 sf with 2.5 stories. I will be using 3/4 feed and return lines for all the radiators.
I have looked at numerous boilers and need to know what type would be best, a cast iron or steel boiler. I understand the cast iron has higher mass and takes longer to heat water, but at the same time should last longer. is this actually true???
In any case the boiler would have to be direct-vent.
To heat my house, which has a heat loss of 120,000 btu including basement and garage, do I use the btu rating or the I=B=R rating of the boiler. I am located in the northeast where the temp can get cold. My wife is cold-blooded, so the temp in the house has to be at least 72 - 75 degs.
Last, I have 2 electric water heaters (50 & 80 galloons), due to 2 whirlpool tubs. Would it be more efficient to replace them with an indirect storage tank, or feed these with a hot water coil??? Thanks for any advise...
