"filled with gunk" is a lot different than "threads gone - as in metal missing. I don't have time to look up my drill/tap sizes, but if the smaller end of your air vent thread is a sloppy fit into the hole, it probably should be drilled 7/16 for a 1/4in pipe tap and a 1/4x1/8 bushing put in. You can try tapping for 1/8 first if the vent wants to grab. A very slight leakage can't hurt - a vent falling out can take the wallpaper and plaster off the walls if you go away.
