It really is a typical one-pipe system as I've seen in various diagrams on the web.

And to top it off, it magically fixed itself. The only thing we noticed as we learned about steam heat was that everything should be pitched to return the condensated water. The floor was replaced 2 yrs ago and the contractors left the radiator level. We added a few small shims on the steam vent side and a few days later, it seems to work as well as it used to.

I'm still puzzled about what may have caused the problem, but at this point, I'm not touching anything that works :-)
